Raports annuels

Annual Report 2006

Dear reader,
2006 was a year of great hope for Haïti. After two years of political turmoil, elections took place and brought a climate of expectations among the people. Every one was expecting for improved security, employment opportunities, improved public infrastructure, reduction in the cost of living and political stability.
But almost half of the year 2006 had been plagued by social terror. There were many incidents of organized murders, torture and kidnappings of adults, women (...)

Annual Report 2005

The electoral year has shown us again the challenges lying ahead for Haiti and its people. This year, scheduled elections were postponed four times and finally pushed forward to 2006. Neither the interim government nor the 9,000 UN troops on hand were able to protect citizens against an immense wave of violence.
Insecurity including kidnappings, rapes, and killings were prevalent events during the year. Haitian society generally lives in fear, is left to its own devices by a corrupt (...)

Annual Report 2004

What has been announced as the year of the bicentennial celebration - 200 years of independence - ended up becoming the year of the emergencies and catastrophes. Not that Haiti hasn't seen that before - but the observer has to admit that in spite of the daily struggle for justice and economic growth the year 2004 has hit Haiti and its population very hard.
The Haitian Historian, Claude Moise, points out four major events that characterize the year 2004 : two natural catastrophes and two (...)

Annual Report 2003

2003 added another year of turmoil, disturbances and missed opportunities to the Haitian history, and as in the former LWF Haiti Annual Reports, it seems there is nothing else to report but poverty, misery, corruption and violence.
2003 was the year which sharply marked the beginning of the end of the Lavalas Government, if not Lavalas movement, directed by Ex-President Jean Bertrand Aristide who on February 29, 2004 was forced to leave Haiti due to international pressure and the (...)

Annual Report 2002

Instead of a Foreword...
Further down the slope -
The socio-economic situation in Haiti 2002
For the fourth time now I am writing a foreword for the LWF Haiti Annual Report. Since 1999 I was hoping to be able to come up with better news next year, but - failed. It is sad to say it, but the year 2002 saw yet another increase of violence and instability in Haiti, while citizens also experienced the further deterioration of already dismal living conditions.
In spite of (...)
